Gazing across the expanse, can you envision Langen evolving from a quaint farming village to a bustling hub? Langen, nestled near Bremerhaven, first appeared in historical records in 1139. For centuries, it remained a sparsely populated agricultural community. Imagine Langen in 1549, consisting of just 4.5 farmsteads and 23 cottages. The 20th century brought significant change. Langen’s proximity to Bremerhaven spurred rapid growth, transforming it into a residential haven for commuters. This growth led to the division of Langen into distinct districts: North, South, and Mitte. Langen’s history intertwines with prominent figures like Juergen Hinsch, a general contractor for North German Lloyd, who resided in Langen and has a street named after him. Another notable resident was Leopold Ziegenbein, a renowned commodore of North German Lloyd, whose final resting place is in Langen. Langen’s transformation also involved incorporating surrounding communities. From 1971 to 1974, the collective municipalities of Langen and Neuenwalde existed. These were integrated into the municipality of Langen in 1974 during the Lower Saxony regional reform. Langen officially became a town on July 1, 1990. However, Langen’s independent status ended on January 1, 2015. It merged with the Samtgemeinde Bederkesa to form the town of Geestland.
