Here we stand before Lange Lene, a behemoth of a building stretching a staggering 333 meters. Lange Lene dominates the skyline of Probstheida, a testament to a bygone era of ambitious urban planning. This colossal structure isn’t just long. It’s a story etched in concrete, a microcosm of lives lived within its prefabricated walls. Lange Lene was born between 1966 and 1968. The Baukombinat Leipzig, fueled by the vision of architect Erich Böhme, brought this ten-story giant to life in just 19 months. Imagine families moving into the brand-new apartments in September 1968, a fresh start in a freshly built community. At one point, nearly a third of Probstheida’s population called Lange Lene home. The building boasts 795 apartments, ranging from cozy one-room studios to larger three-room family dwellings. Lange Lene is more than just apartments strung together. Its name, a nod to the Saxon dialect poet Lene Voigt, adds a touch of local charm. The street it resides on, Lene-Voigt-Straße, further cements this tribute. Voigt, known for her witty and relatable poems about everyday life, lived nearby in the former Dösen sanatorium. This connection adds a layer of cultural significance to this already imposing structure. Time took its toll, but Lange Lene was reborn between 1998 and 2000 thanks to a massive 45-million D-Mark renovation. This revitalization breathed new life into the aging giant, modernizing its amenities while preserving its unique character. Today, Lange Lene is a protected landmark, its historical and architectural importance officially recognized. Even in 2018, Lange Lene housed over 1,300 residents. A senior service, run by a local association, caters to the needs of the many elderly residents who call this place home. Lange Lene remains a vibrant community, a city within a city. It stands as a remarkable example of East German architecture, a symbol of resilience and community spirit.
