Lang Lang wasn’t always known by that name. It was once called Carrington after Lord Carrington. But the Aboriginal name Lang Lang meaning “stones” or “stony” is far more evocative. This reflects the landscape itself.

Settled initially in 1839 by Jamieson and Rawsort Lang Lang grew slowly. Land selection began in 1866. Pioneer families drained swamps and cleared land. They established farms and dairies. A jetty at Lang Lang Beach connected them to Melbourne. The railway arrived in 1890. This boosted Lang Lang’s growth. The railway station was initially a mile east named Carrington. But the town eventually shifted closer to the station.

A butter factory opened in the 1890s. Lang Lang became a bustling hub. It held its first agricultural show in 1901. Cattle horses and sheep were traded in the busy livestock market. Sadly the butter factory closed in the 1940s. The building was later used for various industries including hosiery making.

The Lang Lang Rodeo is a key part of Lang Lang’s identity. This annual event has been held since the 1940s. It shows the town’s spirit and community. Lang Lang boasts a football team and netball team. There’s even a golf course.

General Motors Holden operated a vehicle proving ground near Lang Lang. This was a key part of the town’s economic life. Holden’s departure in 2017 raised concerns for local jobs. Today Lang Lang continues as a rural service centre with shops a hotel a police station and schools. It’s a testament to its enduring spirit. The town’s history is a rich tapestry.
