“What if walls could whisper stories of resilience?” a resident mused aloud, gesturing towards the heart of Landsbyen Sølund. Here, in Denmark’s largest residential community for adults with significant and permanent physical and mental disabilities, life unfolds in a tapestry of shared experiences and unwavering support. Landsbyen Sølund isn’t merely a collection of buildings. It’s a vibrant village, a testament to the power of community and the enduring human spirit. Since 1935, Landsbyen Sølund has fostered a unique environment where residents and staff alike contribute to a culture of creativity and care. The village’s core philosophy revolves around nurturing a sense of safety, belonging, and love for every resident. They believe that everyone, regardless of their abilities, deserves to feel valued, cherished, and deeply connected to their community. This commitment to individual growth and well-being is evident in every aspect of Landsbyen Sølund. Originally a farm acquired by the municipality in 1885, Landsbyen Sølund’s transformation began in 1933. Skanderborg Municipality reached out to De Kellerske Aandssvageanstalter in Brejning, proposing to lease the Sølund farm as a satellite institution. This proposal was accepted, and after renovations in 1934-35, Sølund reopened as Aandssvageanstalten Sølund. Through the years, Landsbyen Sølund has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting evolving approaches to care. Since 2007, under the management of Skanderborg Municipality, the village has continued to expand its services. While most residents come from other municipalities, with Aarhus being the largest contributor, the heart of Landsbyen Sølund remains firmly rooted in its local community. In the late 1990s, the name officially changed to Landsbyen Sølund. This marked a significant shift towards a more inclusive and community-focused model of care. Embracing the principles of “Gentle Teaching,” Landsbyen Sølund provides both day and residential care for approximately 215 residents across 14 distinct housing units. Today, Landsbyen Sølund is more than just a residential facility. It’s a thriving community where lives intertwine, friendships blossom, and hope shines brightly. The village actively engages with the surrounding community, participating in events like the Sølund Music Festival and Smukfest. This connection to the wider world enriches the lives of the residents and strengthens the bonds that make Landsbyen Sølund such a special place.
