It originally started in Bruchsal Palace in 1803 as the Badisches Oberhofgericht. It later moved to Mannheim Palace before finally settling here in Karlsruhe. The building itself has seen its share of history. It was constructed between 1874 and 1879 by Heinrich Leonhard. Initially it housed not only the Landgericht Karlsruhe, but also the Oberlandesgericht Karlsruhe and the Kreis- und Hofgericht. The Oberlandesgericht moved out in 1902. One of the most famous trials held at the Landgericht Karlsruhe, in the grand Schwurgerichtssaal, was the 1907 murder trial of lawyer Carl Hau. The case garnered international attention. The building, heavily damaged during World War II, was meticulously restored and even expanded. An annex was added in 1971. The interior was also renovated. The Landgericht Karlsruhe serves a large district. It includes the cities of Karlsruhe and Pforzheim, and the districts of Karlsruhe and Enzkreis. Over a million people fall under its jurisdiction. Today, the Landgericht Karlsruhe is a vital part of the German legal system. It stands as a symbol of law and order.
