Before the Lander Street Bridge existed daily life in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood was drastically different. South Lander Street was a vital east-west artery. It served 13000 vehicles daily. About 16% were trucks. It also served 1400 pedestrians many heading to the SODO light rail station. However trains frequently interrupted life. The street closed for over 4.5 hours each day because of train crossings. This caused significant delays. Lost revenue resulted. Increased idling and carbon dioxide emissions were also problems. Safety was a major concern too.

The Lander Street Bridge is a remarkable solution to these long-standing problems. Its construction was a massive undertaking. The project cost an estimated $123 million. The Port of Seattle contributed $15 million. Federal funds were essential too. The project received a $45 million grant. The city also contributed $20 million from the Move Seattle levy.

For years this crossing ranked in the top 0.5% nationwide for high-risk at-grade crossings according to the Federal Rail Administration. Tragically three pedestrians lost their lives since 2011 due to train impacts. The Lander Street Bridge dramatically improves safety. It separates trains from people walking biking or driving. Emergency responders now have unimpeded access.

The bridge is not just about safety. It’s about boosting the local economy. It significantly improves travel efficiency. This is crucial in this key freight and maritime corridor. The Lander Street Bridge provides access between transit hubs and employment centers. It also diverts traffic away from congested areas like South Spokane Street. The Lander Street Bridge truly embodies Seattle’s commitment to progress sustainability and the well-being of its citizens. It stands as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration. The result is a safer more efficient and vibrant SODO neighborhood. The bridge opened on October 7 2020.
