Ever wondered what it’s like to live where your plane is parked right outside your door? Here at Lakeway Airpark, that dream is a reality for about 30 homeowners. Lakeway Airpark, a privately owned, public-use airport nestled in the scenic Texas Hill Country near Austin, offers a unique blend of residential living and aviation passion. Originally known as Airfield Ranch, this airstrip dates back to 1939. It later became the centerpiece of a planned resort community in the late 1960s. While the original development faltered, the airpark persevered. Purchased by a group of residents in 1995, Lakeway Airpark is now managed by the non-profit Lakeway Airpark, Inc., ensuring its continued operation for the benefit of the community. Interestingly, the land could revert back to a previous owner, Ross Perot, if it ever ceases to be an airport. The airpark boasts a 3,930-foot runway, extended in 1989 from its original 3,200 feet, with further improvements to the runway end zones in 2003. Beyond the homes with direct runway access, there are also four condo-style hangars and a large non-residential hangar on adjacent property. Lakeway Airpark even had a brief stint with scheduled passenger service in the mid-1970s, thanks to Bee Line, a small commuter airline. Today, Lakeway Airpark continues to thrive as a hub for general aviation. As of 2008, it saw an average of 24 aircraft operations daily, with most aircraft based there being single-engine.
