A legacy etched in brick and mortar. That’s Lakeside School. Standing before you is more than just a school. It’s a living testament to Seattle’s history. Lakeside School opened its doors in 1919. Frank G Moran founded this institution. He envisioned a school that would nurture students’ intellectual curiosity. Initially a boys’ school it was known as the Moran-Lakeside School. It was intended to prepare students for Moran’s other school on Bainbridge Island. The school’s name changed to Lakeside Day School in 1923. A year later it moved to Washington Park.

By 1930 Lakeside had outgrown its space. A new campus was built in North Seattle. Four buildings were constructed including dormitories. The Great Depression caused financial hardship. Yet the school persevered adding more buildings throughout the 1930s. Several were named after students who died in World War II. Lakeside’s focus shifted in the 1950s. It implemented stricter academic requirements. In 1965 it launched a summer program with Seattle Public Schools. This program offered free education. It also marked the enrollment of the school’s first Black students. The school uniform was abolished in 1969 by student vote. The boarding program ended in 1971.

A significant moment arrived in 1971. Lakeside merged with St Nicholas School a girls’ school. This merger made Lakeside co-educational. The Lakeside campus housed older students. St Nicholas housed younger ones. New buildings were constructed to complete the merger. Lakeside School boasts a rich history. It is known for its rigorous academics and vibrant student life. It has numerous student-led clubs. Affinity groups cater to students of diverse backgrounds. The school’s athletic program offers a wide variety of sports. Lakeside’s alumni are incredibly accomplished. They include Bill Gates Paul Allen and many others who have made significant contributions to various fields.

Today Lakeside School continues to thrive. It provides a challenging yet supportive environment. Students from all backgrounds come together. They learn grow and make lifelong connections. Lakeside’s legacy is a powerful one. It is a school that shapes leaders and innovators. A school that fosters intellectual curiosity and personal growth. A school that has profoundly impacted the lives of its students and Seattle itself. So take a moment to appreciate this incredible institution. This is Lakeside School a place where history and future intertwine.
