How did a simple hotel give its name to an entire township? We’re standing on the edge of what was once Lake View Township, a community shaped by its namesake, a humble hotel with a grand view. Before the towering skyscrapers and bustling avenues, this area, stretching from Fullerton to Devon, was a peaceful escape from the city. In 1854, entrepreneurs James Rees and Elisha Hundley, sensing opportunity, built the Lakeview House hotel. Imagine a time when celery fields stretched as far as the eye could see, with Lake Michigan shimmering in the distance. This hotel, attracting weary Chicagoans yearning for fresh air and respite from a cholera outbreak, quickly became a haven. It’s said that while standing on the hotel’s veranda, admiring the breathtaking vista, a prominent citizen, Walter Newberry, exclaimed, “This place, this view, it must be called Lake View House!” The name stuck, and soon, the burgeoning community surrounding the hotel adopted the name. Even after the hotel was lost to time, the legacy of Lake View lived on. The name, echoing the beauty and tranquility of its origins, became synonymous with the growing township. And as residential areas flourished and businesses sprung up, that very essence of ‘Lake View’ – a place of peace and scenic beauty on the lake – continued to draw people in, shaping the community we see today.
