High on a plateau, Lake Mountain Alpine Resort beckons. Lake Mountain Alpine Resort isn’t named for a body of water. It’s named after George Lake, a surveyor of the region. Or perhaps, as VICNames suggests, it’s named for the “tarns, ponds and bogs near the summit”. This little contradiction adds a touch of mystery to our visit. Lake Mountain Alpine Resort stands about 120 kilometers northeast of Melbourne. It’s nestled within the breathtaking Yarra Ranges National Park. Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is a beloved destination, especially for families. Its close proximity to Melbourne makes it the most popular ski resort in Australia, if you count sightseers.

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort isn’t just for skiers. The resort offers 37 kilometers of cross-country ski trails. But many visitors come simply to enjoy the snow play areas and toboggan runs. The resort also features a visitor center, opened in 2004. This center provides facilities like conference centers and a café that stays open year-round. The café caters to bushwalkers and cyclists in the warmer months. Sadly, the Snow Gum Lodge, once available for overnight stays, was lost in the devastating 2009 bushfires. While much of the surrounding forest and resort buildings were also destroyed, the main Day Visitor Centre survived. The resort demonstrated resilience, quickly rebuilding to reopen for the following winter season.

Beyond the snow, Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is a popular destination for road cyclists. The challenging climb from Marysville is a favorite. The climb is 21.3 kilometers, with an average gradient of 4.3%. The steepest section is in the first 4.3 kilometers. This section has an average gradient of 8.1%. This makes it a demanding yet rewarding ride for cycling enthusiasts. Lake Mountain Alpine Resort offers something for everyone. Whether you’re a skier, a sightseer, a cyclist, or just looking for a snowy escape, this resort offers a memorable experience in the heart of the Victorian Alps. So, take a deep breath of fresh mountain air. Let the beauty of Lake Mountain Alpine Resort captivate you. Enjoy the snow, the scenery, and the diverse activities.
