Wow. Look at this impressive plaque. It’s a testament to Lake Highlands Elementary School a true cornerstone of this community. This isn’t just any school. Lake Highlands Elementary holds the honor of being the very first elementary school built in Lake Highlands. Can you imagine opening in October 1955 with just six classes? The entire Richardson Independent School District back then was tiny only two buildings and fewer than 800 students.
Think about that for a second. Today Lake Highlands’ area includes nine elementary schools and two junior highs all feeding into the massive Lake Highlands High School. One of four high schools in the district.
This little school really grew. By 1962 nearly 600 students filled its halls. In the 1970s at the peak of the neighborhood’s first growth spurt it housed almost 1000 students. As those first students grew up enrollment dipped. But the school adapted. It became a hub for specialized programs like bilingual education pre-kindergarten and a centralized special education program.
A wave of new families arrived in the 1990s. Lake Highlands Elementary added classes to handle the influx especially in kindergarten first and second grades. This plaque commemorates that incredible journey of growth and change.
In 2001-2002 major renovations transformed the school. Bond funds paid for a new library a computer lab and a complete overhaul. The school was renovated hall by hall. Classes moved into temporary classrooms while the magic happened. When it was finished the school was essentially brand new. New halls new floors a new main office. Yet the original design remained. Updated windows ramps and fresh paint completed the transformation. This plaque is a wonderful keepsake reflecting not only the history of the school but the resilience and adaptability of the Lake Highlands community. This school has always been about empowering students helping them become effective communicators leaders and thinkers. A legacy that continues today.
