Did you know that Lake Hiawatha was once called Rice Lake? The land around the lake was once a vast wetland, filled with cattails and wild rice. The Dakota people who lived here called the lake Rice Lake because of the abundance of wild rice that grew along its shores. In the early 1900s, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board bought the land around the lake and decided to transform it into a park. They dredged the lake, making it deeper and larger, and planted trees and flowers around its shores. The lake and park were named Lake Hiawatha in 1924. It’s a beautiful spot to enjoy boating, fishing, and a picnic. Lake Hiawatha is also home to a public golf course and a recreation center that hosts a variety of activities throughout the year. In the winter, you can ice skate and enjoy cross-country skiing on the lake.
