The Lakatos utcai viztorony wasn’t always a part of the landscape. Construction began in 2003. The project was completed in 2007. The Budapest Waterworks commissioned the design. They wanted a structure that would enhance the city’s architectural beauty. The winning design by Perényi Tamás and his team was far from conventional.
Instead of a symmetrical tower the Lakatos utcai viztorony boasts an asymmetrical design. Its massive 3000 cubic meter water reservoir doesn’t sit directly beneath its peak. It’s a bold departure from traditional water tower designs. The structure’s asymmetry is its most striking feature. This unique shape is not just for aesthetics. It was carefully calculated to optimize the structure’s strength and efficiency.
The Lakatos utcai viztorony is imposing. It stands 42 meters tall. Its construction required nearly 700 tons of rebar and 3500 cubic meters of high-strength concrete. Its base a 30-meter diameter cylinder holds 1000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete. This foundation ensures the tower’s stability even when completely full of water.
The project’s scale is impressive. The cost reached 1.4 billion forints. This demonstrates the significant investment in providing reliable water service to the growing population of South Buda. The Lakatos utcai viztorony was constructed to provide the necessary water storage for the expanding residential areas of this part of Budapest. The area’s hilly location made a large water tower necessary for consistent water pressure.
The water tower’s design isn’t only impressive from afar. Its interior features a staircase a 12-person lift and other mechanical elements. These are housed within the horseshoe shaped tower stem. The stem’s clever design also incorporates a small restroom ensuring convenient access for maintenance personnel.
The reservoir is divided into two compartments. One holds about 1100 cubic meters. The other holds approximately 1900 cubic meters. Each compartment can hold water to a height of 6 meters. Above that is an air space. A walkway runs through this space. It allows access to both reservoirs for maintenance.
