Gazing out at the tranquil waters of the Manukau Harbour, we find ourselves at Laingholm Point. This point marks a significant spot in the geography of the area. Laingholm Point is part of the larger Laingholm community nestled in the Waitākere Ranges of West Auckland. Laingholm’s story began with two brothers, George and John Laing. These pioneering farmers arrived in 1854. They purchased a vast 610-acre expanse and began shaping the valley into their farm. Their family resided in the Roseneath farmhouse, a testament to their early presence. The Laing family’s legacy is etched into the very name of the community, “Laingholm.” They continued to cultivate the land until 1921, leaving an indelible mark on the area’s history. Laingholm wasn’t always easily accessible. Before roads connected the community to the wider world in 1914, residents relied on a dock at Little Muddy Creek. This dock served as their primary link to the outside, a vital lifeline for trade and communication. Today, Laingholm Point and the surrounding community retain much of their natural beauty. The area is a haven for native flora, with pōhutukawa and rātā trees dominating the coastal fringe. Further inland, the landscape transitions into a warm lowlands pūriri forest. The slopes of Laingholm are also adorned with the vibrant West Coast kōwhai, adding a splash of color to the green tapestry. Laingholm Point, with its breathtaking views of the Manukau Harbour, stands as a reminder of this rich history. It whispers tales of pioneering farmers, coastal forests, and a community connected to the land and sea.
