Perched high above, Laguna Flyover stands as a testament to Singapore’s ever-evolving infrastructure. It is more than just a bridge. It is a vital artery in the city’s complex expressway system.

The East Coast Parkway or ECP features the Laguna Flyover. The ECP is Singapore’s only expressway named a “parkway”. The ECP’s western end was originally linked to the Ayer Rajah Expressway near Shenton Way via the Benjamin Sheares Bridge.

Picture this. The year is 1981. The East Coast Parkway is newly opened. Imagine driving along the ECP, the wind in your hair, with the Singapore skyline on one side and the sea on the other. You approach the Laguna Flyover. It is a seamless transition. The flyover carries you over the junction below.

The Laguna Flyover is one of several flyovers along the ECP. Others include Changi Flyover, Tanah Merah Flyover, Marine Parade Flyover, Tanjong Katong Flyover and Tanjong Rhu Flyover. These flyovers ensure smooth traffic flow. They connect residential districts like Bedok South, Marine Parade, Siglap, Katong and Tanjong Rhu.

Did you know that the ECP was built on reclaimed land? Construction began in the early 1970s and took almost a decade. The ECP opened the same year as Changi Airport. The ECP provided a fast route from the airport to the city. The well-landscaped expressway impressed visitors with its colourful blooms.

In 1998, the ECP became the first expressway tested with Electronic Road Pricing or ERP gantries. This shows Singapore’s commitment to managing traffic flow.

Before expressways like ECP and Laguna Flyover, driving from Changi Airport to Jurong could take forever. The road network consisted of major roads like Bukit Timah Road and Upper Changi Road. Expressways significantly improved travel time. They allowed more vehicles to move per hour.

The Laguna Flyover is an integral part of Singapore’s expressway network. It facilitates movement across the island. It is a testament to Singapore’s vision. It ensures efficient transport for everyone. As you drive over the Laguna Flyover, remember its role in Singapore’s journey. It is a journey towards becoming a modern and connected city.
