Deep within the heart of Parque Chico Mendes lies a secret. It’s called Lagoinha das Taxas. Some simply call it Lagoinha. This freshwater lagoon is a unique gem in the Região dos Lagos. Lagoinha das Taxas sits just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood. Imagine the vibrant ecosystem surrounding Lagoinha das Taxas. The restinga vegetation thrives here. Shrubs, creeping plants, palms, aquatic plants, and fungi paint a picture of untouched beauty. This natural haven was preserved thanks to the creation of Parque Chico Mendes. The park now finds itself completely encircled by the urban sprawl of Rio de Janeiro. This urban development contrasts sharply with the park’s state just twenty years ago, when it remained largely untouched by urbanization. Lagoinha das Taxas is also home to the yellow-chinned jacare. This large reptile feasts on small rodents and birds that frequent the area. These jacarés roam freely around the lagoon. They pose no threat to the park’s visitors. Despite its protected status, Lagoinha das Taxas faces an ongoing struggle. The channels designed to carry rainwater to the lagoon also carry sewage from the surrounding luxury buildings.
