The Carnation Revolution took place on April 25, 1974. It was a peaceful military coup. It led to a democratic Portugal.

From 1580 to 1640, Spain ruled Lisbon. In 1640, the Portuguese Restoration War freed the city.

The Peace Treaty between Spain and Portugal occurred in Lisbon in 1668. Spain acknowledged Portugal’s new dynasty.

French forces invaded Lisbon in 1807. The royal family fled to Brazil before their arrival.

Lisbon thrived as a major port from the 15th century. Colonization’s end brought decline. Citizens migrated. Lisbon became a ghost town.

Portugal joined the EU in 1986. Lisbon received financial assistance. It regained its former glory.
