Today Lading Sø is a nature reserve. It’s a protected area. Motorboats are banned. The lake’s inflow and outflow must remain unpolluted. Even lowering the water level requires permission.
Observe the diverse wildlife. Look closely. You might spot a great crested grebe or a coot. The surrounding reed beds are home to reed warblers reed buntings cuckoos nightingales and willow warblers. Open grassy areas attract snipes and curlews. Otters even make their home here.

Near the lake’s south side lies Troldhøj a medieval site. This ancient hillfort once stood guard over Lading Sø. Its ramparts still stand testament to a bygone era. One legend credits Niels Ebbesen for gifting Troldborg to Svend Trøst. It was a reward for his aid in the murder of the Count of Randers in 1340.
