Hidden beneath the Parisian skyline, Lac de Créteil whispers tales of transformation. This isn’t a lake born of nature’s whim. Lac de Créteil emerged from the remnants of a gravel and gypsum quarry. Imagine the scene. From 1940 to 1976, this area bustled with activity. The quarry, carved into the ancient alluvial deposits of the Seine and Marne rivers, eventually reached the Champigny water table. This table, fed by the Marne, flooded the quarry and gave birth to a series of deep ponds. These ponds would eventually merge and transform into the Lac de Créteil we see today. After extensive landscaping, the quarry took on its current elongated form, stretching north to south. Lac de Créteil spans 1,500 meters in length and varies from 250 to 400 meters in width. Its average depth is a comfortable four meters, reaching a maximum of six. The lake covers approximately 40 hectares and boasts a perimeter of about four kilometers. Lac de Créteil isn’t solely reliant on rainfall. It’s also fed by the Mont-Mesly storm drain, which collects runoff from 40 hectares of urban area, supplementing the water table’s contribution. As you stroll along the shores of Lac de Créteil, take note of the diverse flora. A variety of trees and shrubs provide a vibrant backdrop. Aquatic plants line the edges of the beaches, creating a haven for local wildlife. The history of Lac de Créteil is etched into the city’s timeline. In February 1968, the city council voted to join a joint association to create the Parc d’Intérêt Général de Créteil. This park, which included the lake and a regional park, was part of the new town’s master plan. The recreational facilities around Lac de Créteil have evolved over time. A sailing school opened in 1978. In the summer of 1979, swimming in the lake was officially permitted. The lake was treated like a swimming pool, ensuring both safety with lifeguards and hygiene through water treatment. The official inauguration of the outdoor recreation center took place in June 1980. Shortly after, the department’s first wave pool opened, offering a thrilling new aquatic experience. Lac de Créteil has seen its share of challenges. In 1986, the water level dropped significantly. In 2001, the discovery of botulism in the lake led to a fishing ban. But Lac de Créteil remains a vibrant testament to human ingenuity and the power of transformation.
