High above Marseille, a golden figure watches over the city. This is La Vierge Dorée. She stands atop a column, a beacon of faith and history. La Vierge Dorée wasn’t always here, at the corner of Boulevard Voltaire and Rue des Héros. Her story begins in 1854, with Pope Pius IX’s proclamation of the Immaculate Conception. This dogma declared that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin. To celebrate, commemorative columns were planned across many cities. Marseille decided on two monuments. One was the crowning of the Tour Sainte in the Sainte-Marthe district. The other was, of course, La Vierge Dorée. A committee of 25 members, including vicars, bankers, and merchants, was formed. Their task was to find the perfect location for La Vierge Dorée. The decision was far from simple, sparking debates between the city and the diocese. Bishop Eugène de Mazenod, a devout believer in the Immaculate Conception, suggested the end of Cours Bonaparte, today’s Cours Pierre Puget. The municipality, however, proposed Place Notre-Dame du Mont or along the avenue leading to Notre-Dame de la Garde. Finally, to end the disagreement, the bishop chose land owned by the church near the Petit Séminaire. This spot, at the end of Boulevard du Nord (now Boulevard d’Athènes), was where the monumental staircase of Saint-Charles station now stands. The architect Henri-Jacques Espérandieu designed the monument. Its inauguration in 1857 was a grand event. A procession led by the bishop wound its way through the city streets, culminating in a mass at the foot of La Vierge Dorée. The statue itself, a three-meter-tall gilded lead alloy, portrays the Virgin crushing a serpent and holding a lily, a symbol of purity. She stands on a Carrara marble column, resting on a Crussol stone pedestal. Two ornate candelabra frame the ensemble, all enclosed by a wrought-iron fence. The arrival of the railway and the construction of Saint-Charles station necessitated a direct access route to the city center via Boulevard d’Athènes. In 1922, La Vierge Dorée was moved to her current location, making way for the station’s monumental staircase. This relocation caused controversy between the socialist mayor, Siméon Flaissières, and some of the Catholic community. However, thanks to Bishop Joseph Antoine Fabre’s efforts, a compromise was reached. La Vierge Dorée remains a prominent figure in Marseille’s cityscape, a testament to the city’s rich history and unwavering faith.
