Gazing at La Soledat, one might not immediately grasp its layered past. La Soledat’s history stretches back centuries. It began not as the bustling neighborhood we see today but as a place of solitude and reflection.

Let me tell you about the origins of La Soledat. The name “La Soledat” translates to “solitude.” This refers to an old convent. It was founded in the late 16th century. The convent was named after the Virgin of the Soledad. It stood between the roads to Manacor and Sineu. These roads are now the Ma-15 and Ma-3011 highways.

The establishment of the friars was difficult. The area was not very healthy. They abandoned it in 1586. They returned in 1596. Then they finally left in 1665.

Fast forward to 1851. S’Hort des Ca was divided into plots. The Can Ribes textile factory was established. New plots and industrial companies transformed La Soledat. It became a working-class neighborhood in the late 19th century. By the early 20th century, La Soledat had grown. In 1905, it had 264 houses and 1240 residents. Between 1920 and 1930, the neighborhood expanded significantly. This was partly due to Can Ribes operating at full capacity during World War I. The Caixa d’Estalvis bank built 35 homes for workers in the 1920s. Joaquim and Francesc Janer established the Maquinària Agrícola Janer factory. In 1922, the Palma-La Soledat tram line opened. It ran until 1959. In 1933, under Mayor Emili Darder, the first stone of the Public School was laid.

After the Spanish Civil War, more factories arrived. These included the Foneria Mallorquina and the Salom shoe factory. However, from the 1960s economic growth led to pressure. There was pressure to build housing for people arriving from the peninsula. This changed the neighborhood’s character. Low-rise houses were replaced by large apartment blocks. This resulted in a significant lack of infrastructure.

The construction of the new church began in 1884. Pere d’Alcàntara Penya designed it. The church has a neo-Gothic style. In 1894, it was declared a vicariate in capite. It became a parish in 1913. The nuns of Charity also settled here. They dedicated themselves to educating children. They also served the parish. The church of Sant Josep Obrer was separated from it in 1953.

La Soledat is now divided into two administrative units. La Soledat Nord is north of the Manacor road. La Soledat Sud is south of the road.

La Soledat celebrates festivals for the Virgin of La Soledat in September.

The neighborhood has seen various sports clubs and cultural groups emerge over the years. These include the Club Esportiu Soledat.

Today, La Soledat stands as a testament to Palma’s evolving story. Its humble beginnings as a convent. Its transformation into a working-class hub. Its current state as a diverse residential area. It all contributes to its unique identity. Take a moment to appreciate how La Soledat has transformed over time.
