Beyond the bustling streets of Montevideo lies a hidden gem. It’s a city brimming with history and resilience. It’s called La Paz. La Paz is nestled in the Canelones Department, just a stone’s throw from the Montevideo Department border. It’s part of the expansive Montevideo Metropolitan Area. Our journey begins in 1872. A visionary named Ramón Álvarez founded this charming villa. His generous donation of land stipulated the construction of a church, a school, and a police station. These were the cornerstones of La Paz. Fast forward to 1957, La Paz blossomed into a city. Initially, La Paz was envisioned as a summer retreat for affluent families from Montevideo. Imagine elegant gardens and impressive buildings rising from what was once barren land. It became a social hub. However, as times changed, so did La Paz. The rise of automobiles shifted vacationers’ preferences toward the coasts. La Paz faced a challenge. But then came a second act. The discovery of granite deposits around 1884 transformed La Paz. The quarries became a vital source of granite for paving the streets of both Montevideo and Buenos Aires. Even grand projects like the Legislative Palace and the Port of Montevideo relied on La Paz’s granite. This sparked a wave of immigration. Skilled workers and engineers from Europe flocked to La Paz, contributing their expertise to the “art of stone.” The Union General de Picapedreros y Graniteros de La Paz formed in 1903. This union sought to protect workers’ rights and improve the often hazardous working conditions. The granite industry shaped La Paz’s identity. But progress has two sides. The introduction of asphalt for road construction led to the decline of the granite industry. Quarries closed. The livelihood of many was affected. Today, the abandoned quarries stand as silent witnesses to La Paz’s past. They are a testament to the industry that built not only streets and cities but also the identity of its people. La Paz has not forgotten its past. A monument on José Batlle y Ordóñez street pays tribute to the picapedreros. They are remembered as integral to La Paz’s and Uruguay’s national identity. La Paz also celebrates its notable citizens like sculptor José Belloni. His iconic works, like “La Carreta” and “El Entrevero”, capture the essence of Uruguayan life. Writer Javier de Viana found solace in La Paz after his exile. He became a deputy and continued his literary pursuits. Ramón Álvarez, the town’s founder, and other influential figures like César Mayo Gutiérrez and Eduardo Fernández are also part of La Paz’s rich tapestry. La Paz is more than just a city. It’s a story of transformation, resilience, and a deep connection to its heritage. It’s a place where the past is etched in stone and celebrated in its present.
