Have you ever felt the pulse of history beneath your feet? La Millière in Marseille whispers tales of centuries past. We stand today at the heart of this unique Marseillais district. A place where the rhythm of industry and nature beat in perfect harmony.

La Millière is more than just a neighborhood. It’s a living testament to Marseille’s rich history. Its story unfolds over hills and valleys carved by the Huveaune River. A Provençal river which flows through the heart of La Millière. This same river defines the character of the land.

Imagine a time long ago in the 14th century. The area belonged to Jean de l’Oye. His lands were part of a larger estate called Prat Redon. It lay in a bend of the very Huveaune River. This river shaped not just the geography but the destiny of La Millière. Records show the land being referenced by different names in the 14th and 15th centuries. From Bueras to Buyeras and finally to Pré Redon. Each name marking a chapter in its ongoing story.

The turning point came in 1483. Claude Millière a Marseille hotelier purchased a significant property here. He gave his name to this place. The name endures to this day. The estate passed through various hands. It eventually fell to the Diodé family. They were related to the prestigious de Forbin family. In the 16th century the estate reverted back to the Millière lineage. Martin Millière’s son built the magnificent Bastide de Millière. A landmark structure that once stood proudly overlooking the landscape.

La Millière’s agricultural past is unmistakable. By 1579 it was mainly farmland. A flour mill operated here owned by Pierre Marquesy. This speaks of an agrarian past. A past now only hinted at in its layout and quiet streets. The 19th century brought industry. The Simon oil mill represented the beginnings of a different kind of life. Later came the modern industries. Organico which later became Atochem significantly shaped the district. These industries transformed La Millière’s character. They also altered its landscape forever.

Though industrialization changed the face of La Millière its natural beauty endures. This neighborhood nestles on the left bank of the Huveaune. It’s where this river enters the territory of Marseille. The lush green hills are a sight to behold. You can even spot herons and trout. A reminder of the natural beauty that still lives in this often-overlooked part of the city. Caves and even a speleological cavity beckon those seeking adventure.

Today La Millière has a distinct mix of industrial zones and natural beauty. It’s a place where history and modern life clash and co-exist. It’s a place with its own unique charm a story etched into its very landscape. And a place waiting to be rediscovered.
