Did three knights really stumble upon La grotte de Liesse? Legend says they did. These knights, captured during the Crusades, prayed to the Virgin Mary. An angel delivered a statue, inspiring their escape with the princess Ismeria. They awoke near Liesse-Notre-Dame, where the statue became too heavy to carry. This marked the spot for a chapel, later replaced by a magnificent basilica dedicated to Notre-Dame de Liesse. Miracles followed, drawing pilgrims. From the 15th century onwards, French royalty flocked to La grotte de Liesse, seeking blessings and children. Today, pilgrims still walk “the paths of Liesse” to the basilica, echoing those first miraculous steps.
