“Fire up your imagination” is what I would say as we approach the La Grange Park Fire History Museum. This museum is not just a collection of old equipment. It is a tribute to the brave men and women who have served La Grange Park.
The La Grange Park Fire Department has a long history. It formally began on February 8 1900. Alphonso Kemman became the first Fire Chief. Before that farmhands provided fire protection. They operated out of Alphonso Kemman’s barn as La Grange Park Fire Company 1.
The first Fire Hall was built in 1901. It housed the hose cart and fire bell. The bell alerted volunteers when rung. The hall was located at 447 N Catherine Ave. This is the same location as the current Fire Station 1 built in 1976.
In 1959 Station 2 was built. It is located at 1010 E 31st St. It protects the area east of the IHB Railroad. The first Motorized Fire Apparatus arrived in 1924. It was an REO Speedwagon.
Over the years the Village has used 14 different motorized Fire Apparatus. These include eight Engines three Ladder Trucks and three Rescue Squads. The La Grange Park Fire Department has been served by nine Fire Chiefs.
The department has evolved into a modern full-service fire department. It responds to medical emergencies fires rescues and hazardous materials incidents. They provide public education programs. These programs include fire safety presentations and CPR training.
The department operates out of two fire stations. They are staffed by full-time contract paramedic firefighters and paid-on-call firefighters. Many POC firefighters are also EMTs or paramedics. The department also has automatic-aid and mutual-aid agreements. They work with neighboring fire departments when needed.
The La Grange Park Fire Department’s mission is to protect the public. They protect from illness injury fire and disaster. This is done through public education effective code enforcement and efficient emergency response. Personnel are well trained and prepared. They maintain the spirit of volunteerism. They focus on the needs of those they serve. They conduct themselves at the highest level of moral and ethical standards.

The La Grange Area Historical Society has been collecting documents photographs artifacts and memorabilia since 1972. Volunteers organize newspaper articles dating back to the 1890s. These files are available for public viewing.
The La Grange Area Historical Society hosts historic walking tours and museum tours. They also host monthly Open Houses. Special events are held throughout the year. You can research your home’s history there every Wednesday.
