Did you know that a simple terracotta figure gave rise to the name of an entire neighborhood? That’s the story of La Figurita. This barrio of Montevideo carries a unique name. Its origins trace back to the early 19th century.

Back then, this area marked the start of the first wagon route. These wagons journeyed out from the walled city. Over time, the area transformed. Gardens and large sheds sprung up along the road. This road was known as the Camino de La Figurita. It stretched from Reducto to Jacinto Vera. Eventually, it became Avenida Garibaldi.

The road’s path held a special landmark. At the intersection with what is now General Flores Avenue stood a picturesque tavern. This tavern was special. Its roof was adorned with a terracotta figure. A patron had crafted this little figure.

This small figure became iconic. Locals began referring to the area by the figure’s name. Thus, La Figurita was born. By the early 20th century, La Figurita had established its borders. These borders were General Flores Avenue, Artigas Boulevard, San Martín Avenue, and Garibaldi Avenue.

La Figurita also boasts some notable landmarks. There’s the Dryco-Colón Club headquarters. You can also find the Universal Bowling Club here. The Spanish Hospital is another key feature. The Club Goes basketball court is also in La Figurita.

In the same corner where the famous tavern once stood, a legendary café opened. It was named El Faro. La Figurita also had a strong working-class identity. This was due to the La Águila Saint chocolate factory. It operated for many years in the area.

So, next time you’re in Montevideo, remember La Figurita. Think about the little terracotta figure. It gave its name to this vibrant neighborhood. It is a testament to the power of a small detail to shape local history.
