Did the scent of chocolate ever waft through these very grounds? La Ferme du Buisson, as it stands today, isn’t just a cultural hub. It’s a transformed relic of a chocolate empire. Originally, this wasn’t La Ferme du Buisson, the vibrant arts center. It was a model farm, built in 1880 by Antoine Brutus Menier, the chocolate magnate. He envisioned a state-of-the-art agricultural enterprise to complement his thriving chocolate factory down the road. The farm became a showcase of innovation. In 1889, it even hosted the agricultural machinery competition for the Paris Universal Exposition. Imagine President Sadi Carnot himself, right here, marveling at the latest threshing machines! La Ferme du Buisson was a testament to the Menier family’s ingenuity. They electrified the farm, connected it to the factory with a private railway, and even employed cutting-edge farming techniques. The Menier “M” still proudly adorns the gable. After World War II, the chocolate empire faced increasing competition. The Menier business declined and the farm eventually fell into disrepair. For a while, La Ferme du Buisson seemed destined for demolition or mundane repurposing, perhaps as storage for the burgeoning new town of Marne-la-Vallée. But fate, it seems, had other plans. In the 1970s, a vision emerged to transform La Ferme du Buisson into a center for arts and culture. This vision took shape, and today we see the magnificent result. The original brick walls and metal beams of the main hall now house a theater. The former stable, once filled with livestock, is now a performance space. A modern circus tent sits behind what was once the manure pit. La Ferme du Buisson, listed as a historical monument, offers theater, contemporary art, cinema, and even a restaurant. It is a space where the past and present intertwine, where the echoes of a chocolate dynasty mingle with the vibrant pulse of contemporary creation.
