Gazing up at La Espiga Hendida, one can’t help but feel a sense of awe. This colossal sculpture, also known as The Great Sprig, dominates the intersection of Calzada de Tlalpan and Avenida Taxqueña. La Espiga Hendida isn’t a relic of the 1968 Olympics, as many believe. Its story begins a few years later, in 1973. The architect and sculptor Fernando González Gortázar, known for his work in Guadalajara and Jalisco, brought this monumental piece to life. Commissioned by the Coyoacán delegation as part of an urban beautification project, La Espiga Hendida was intended to be a symbol of prosperity. González Gortázar envisioned it as a Great Sprig of Wheat, representing nourishment, life, nobility, and harmony. It’s a poetic image, echoing the sentiments of countless writers throughout history. Unfortunately, La Espiga Hendida faced years of neglect. Traffic, vandalism, and weather took their toll. But in 2018, 50 years after its creation, the sculpture was fully restored. Today, La Espiga Hendida stands tall once more, a testament to the enduring power of art and a symbol of hope for the future.

Amidst the vibrant streets of Mexico City stands a symbol of friendship. It is the Embassy of Costa Rica. This
