High in the Sierras de Cordoba sits La Cumbre a town steeped in history. Its name La Cumbre meaning The Summit perfectly describes its location. The town’s story is interwoven with the arrival of the railway in the 1890s. La Cumbre became the highest point on the line. British engineers played a vital role in its construction. Their legacy continues to shape the town’s unique Anglo-Argentine culture. The railway no longer runs. The old station now houses a community center a small museum and a tourist information office.

La Cumbre’s unique character is further enhanced by its British heritage. During the 1920s British families built holiday homes. These homes contributed to the town’s distinct English architectural style. A prominent example is the Golf Club founded in 1924. It remains one of La Cumbre’s cherished features. Several English-speaking boarding schools once thrived here. St Marys for girls now functions as a retirement home. Further afield Reydon originally a hotel built by British immigrants is now a hotel. St Paul’s the largest school in town still operates though no longer as a boarding school.

Today La Cumbre is a quieter place for most of the year. Its population swells during the summer holiday months especially January and February. Tourists flock to enjoy the many outdoor attractions. These include paragliding horse riding fishing hiking river swimming and golf. La Cumbre is also part of the Argentine Rally stage of the World Rally Championship. The Christ the Redeemer statue a local landmark was sculpted by Italian-Argentine artist Luis Ramacciotti.

The moderate climate particularly benefits those with respiratory problems. The town offers a unique blend of history culture and natural beauty. Explore the old English style buildings. Stroll along the former railway tracks now covered in weeds. Visit the Dique San Jeronimo a dam and nature area. Enjoy the panoramic views from the Christ the Redeemer statue. La Cumbre a small town with a big story awaits you. Its blend of British heritage and Argentine charm provides a unique and unforgettable experience.
