Before you stands La Cuevita a small cave at the foot of Cerro de la Estrella. This unassuming entrance holds a significant place in Iztapalapa’s history. La Cuevita is more than just a cave. It’s the heart of the Señor de la Cuevita National Sanctuary. This sanctuary grew from a humble hermitage built around La Cuevita itself.

The story begins in 1687. A mortuary statue of Jesus the Señor de la Cuevita was being transported from Villa de Etla Oaxaca to Mexico City for restoration. The journey was interrupted. The statue’s carriers stopped for the night near La Cuevita. The next morning they found the statue inexplicably heavier. They could not move it.

The people of Iztapalapa believed the statue had chosen to stay. They built a small chapel at the cave’s entrance. La Cuevita became a sacred site. The Señor de la Cuevita became an important figure for the people of Iztapalapa.

A devastating cholera epidemic struck in 1833. The people prayed to the Señor de la Cuevita for deliverance. They believed their prayers were answered. The epidemic ended.

In gratitude the people of Iztapalapa began building the cathedral. The Semana Santa processions and passion plays began shortly after. They have been a vital part of Iztapalapa’s public life ever since. The current cathedral stands as a testament to that faith and gratitude. La Cuevita remains at its heart.

La Cuevita is much more than just a place. It is a powerful symbol of faith and community. It’s a place where history legend and devotion intertwine. It is a place that embodies the enduring spirit of Iztapalapa and its people. The weight of the statue in 1687 became the weight of a community’s faith. The simple cave entrance is the beginning of a powerful story. The story of La Cuevita.
