Hidden amidst the vibrant chaos of Mercado de Sonora stands La Concepcion Ixnahualtongo a small church with a rich and layered history. Its unassuming facade belies centuries of stories. It whispers tales of ancient gods and Spanish conquistadors of earthquakes and industrial booms.

La Concepcion Ixnahualtongo’s roots trace back to Huitznahuatonco a Nahuatl name meaning “Place of the gods of the south”. This ancient settlement was home to the Huitznahua people. They held the esteemed duty of crafting the image of Huitzilopochtli the Mexica sun god. Their skilled hands shaped a powerful symbol for their civilization.

The arrival of the Spanish dramatically reshaped the area. La Concepcion Ixnahualtongo fell under the control of various parishes. The exact date it adopted the Immaculate Conception as its patron saint remains unknown. It was part of San Pablo Teopan/Zoquiapan by 1574. A 1772 reform placed the chapel under Santo Tomas la Palma’s control.

Two devastating earthquakes in 1845 severely damaged the bell tower. Yet an 1850 inventory detailed the church’s interior. It included iron rails for pulpits and a semicircular communion rail. Remarkably during the Reforma period the church remained open by order of the Federal District governor.

In 1902 La Concepcion Ixnahualtongo briefly housed the Indios Verdes statues. These giant bronze figures found a more permanent home atop Paseo de La Viga. The industrialization of southern Mexico City transformed the neighborhood. Factories sprung up around the church. These included acid factories tanneries and brickworks. Railroads connected La Viga and San Antonio Abad. Workers flocked to the area leading to the construction of large residential buildings.

The creation of Colonia Merced-Balbuena in 1940 absorbed La Conchita. Much of its old urban layout was lost. Yet the church remains a silent witness. It stands as a testament to the area’s enduring spirit and transformation through time. La Concepcion Ixnahualtongo a small church with a big story. A story of gods industry and faith. A story woven into the fabric of Mexico City itself.
