In 1696, the Order of San Juan de Dios established a hospital in Texcoco. This building, known today as La Casa del Constituyente, has witnessed centuries of Mexican history. Initially serving the needy and travelers passing through the crossroads town of Texcoco, its role evolved dramatically. La Casa del Constituyente became intertwined with the political landscape of Mexico during its transition to a federal republic in 1824. When Mexico City was designated as the federal district, Texcoco became the second capital of the State of Mexico. La Casa del Constituyente then served as the seat of the state congress. Within its walls, in 1827, the first constitution of the State of Mexico was drafted. This pivotal document addressed individual rights and solidified the separation of church and state, a concept deeply rooted in the modern Mexican identity. La Casa del Constituyente stands as a testament to this significant moment. Today, La Casa del Constituyente functions as a cultural center, preserving its multifaceted history. It houses a museum with permanent exhibits showcasing its time as a hospital, the syncretic teachings within its walls, and a recreation of the Congress of 1827. Rotating temporary exhibits feature works by local artists. The building continues to serve as a venue for cultural events, writer and musician gatherings, and a testament to Texcoco’s rich heritage. La Casa del Constituyente’s baroque facade, adorned with indigenous motifs, hints at the layers of history contained within. Its archives also hold precious documents from the first European school in America, a cornerstone of evangelization and the continent’s first school of music, arts, and crafts.
