KUVN-DT’s story starts before it even existed. Channel 23 was first meant for Dallas. A group of oilmen wanted to build a TV station there in 1953. But their plans never took off. The FCC canceled their permits in 1955.
Then, in 1960, the Richardson Independent School District launched KRET-TV on channel 23. It was the first school district-owned TV station in the U.S.. KRET-TV broadcast educational programs. It only reached about 20 miles. KRET-TV stopped broadcasting in 1970.
The current KUVN-DT signed on the air on September 25, 1986, as KIAB. Dr. Elizabeth Vaughan owned it. It broadcast the Consumer Discount Network. CDN closed down in 1987.
Univision bought the station in 1988 for $5.2 million. On August 8, it became KUVN. This was the first time Univision was available over-the-air in North Texas since 1984.
KUVN-CD is another part of the KUVN story. It was transferred to Univision in 1996. In 2001, it moved to channel 47. KUVN-CD is not a repeater station.
KUVN-DT creates 12 hours of local newscasts each week. Univision invested in a news department in 1989. They started producing Spanish-language newscasts.
In 2011, KUVN began broadcasting Primera Edicion and Vive La Mañana on KSTR. KXLN-DT in Houston uses the same titles. In 2012, KUVN began broadcasting its local newscasts in high definition.
In 2015, Univision replaced KUVN’s morning newscast with a regionalized one. It was called Noticias Texas Primera Edicion. It aired on Univision stations in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin.
KUVN shut down its analog signal on June 12, 2009. This was part of the transition to digital television. The station’s digital signal moved to channel 23.
KUVN’s signals are multiplexed. This means they carry multiple channels. KUVN-DT broadcasts Univision on channel 23.1. Other channels include Bounce TV, Ion Mystery, Nuestra Visión, and Shop LC.
KUVN-DT is located on Bryan Street in downtown Dallas. Its transmitter is in Cedar Hill, Texas. KUVN is a digital full-power station with 1000 kilowatts of power.
Today, KUVN-DT continues to serve the Dallas-Fort Worth community. It provides news, information, and entertainment in Spanish. KUVN remains a leading voice for the Hispanic community.
