A legend whispers on the breeze. It speaks of a magical tortoise transforming itself into an island. This is Kusu Island. Right before you lies a place steeped in myth and history. Kusu Island is a small island. It is located about 56 kilometers southwest of Singapore’s main island.

Kusu means Tortoise Island in Hokkien. The island is also known as Pulau Tembakul in Malay. It’s a name that hints at the island’s unique shape. Before reclamation it resembled a giant turtle. Two ridges formed the head and the back.

Thousands of devotees flock to Kusu Island every year. This pilgrimage takes place during the ninth lunar month. They come to worship at the Tua Pek Kong Temple. They also visit three Malay shrines called Keramats. These sacred sites commemorate Syed Abdul Rahman his mother Nenek Ghalib and his sister Puteri Fatimah. Devotees pray here for blessings. They seek good health wealth and marital harmony. Sadly a fire in 2022 badly damaged the Keramats.

The Tua Pek Kong Temple is a striking sight. Built in 1923 it’s dedicated to Da Bo Gong the Merchant God. Guan Yin the Goddess of Mercy is also worshipped here. Many women visit seeking blessings for children or a good husband.

Kusu Island isn’t just a place of worship. It’s also a tranquil escape. Pristine beaches and lagoons offer a peaceful setting. The Tortoise Sanctuary is another popular attraction. It is home to hundreds of tortoises. A hawker centre provides refreshments but only operates during peak seasons. Overnight stays are prohibited.

From its humble beginnings as a small reef Kusu Island has evolved. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the enduring power of legend. It is a journey of spiritual and cultural significance. A visit to Kusu Island is a journey into the heart of Singapore’s rich tapestry. A place where myth and reality intertwine. A place where the spirit of the tortoise lives on.
