“This is a great spot!”, you might say. “But what’s all this fuss about?”. You might think it’s just any ordinary wall. But look closer! This is the Kurt Landauer Gedenktafel Plaque. And this small, humble inscription tells the story of a remarkable man. Kurt Landauer was the president of FC Bayern Munich for four terms. He guided the club through some of its most important years. He even led them to their first national championship win in 1932. But his life was also tragically intertwined with the dark history of Nazi Germany. Being Jewish, he was thrown into the Dachau concentration camp in 1938. Only his military service from World War I saved him from further persecution. He eventually emigrated to Switzerland. He returned to Germany after the war and served as club president again. That’s right, for a third time. The dedication at the Allianz Arena marks his life, his courage, and his contributions to Bayern. Look, it’s in German. It says, “Kurt Landauer, former president of FC Bayern Munich. 1884-1961.”
