Aarhus Municipality saw its potential as a haven for those in need. The farm and surrounding grounds provided space for a worker’s institution, a place for the city’s less fortunate to find a helping hand. Later, the farm housed a children’s summer camp, bringing in vibrant energy from city kids seeking a taste of the countryside.
But let’s come back to our artists! The Barakken has been their home since 2004. It’s a dynamic space where brushstrokes and creativity collide, and the artists are constantly pushing their boundaries. There are no rules here, only endless possibilities.
To this day, the farm is still owned by Aarhus Municipality. The city’s vision for its purpose has evolved from care to creativity. Today, the artists at Barakken carry on a legacy of community, bringing together artists from various disciplines, fostering collaboration, and sharing their passion for art.
