A grand vision took shape in the mind of Franz von Lenbach. He envisioned a palatial residence near Munich’s Königsplatz. Thus, the Künstlervilla was born between 1887 and 1891. The Künstlervilla is an L-shaped complex, comprising a studio wing and a residential section. Lenbach collaborated with the renowned architect Gabriel von Seidl, the mastermind behind iconic structures like the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum and the Deutsches Museum. The Künstlervilla’s architecture is a captivating blend of Tuscan style and modern cubism, thanks to a 2013 addition. Lenbach’s penchant for grandeur extended to the interiors of the Künstlervilla. He adorned the rooms with antique sculptures, copies of classical artworks, paintings, tapestries, and carpets. A verdant garden, inspired by the Italian Renaissance, complements the villa’s splendor. In 1924, Lenbach’s widow sold the Künstlervilla, along with some of its contents and artworks, to the city of Munich. This acquisition formed the foundation of the Lenbachhaus art collection. The Künstlervilla, once a private sanctuary for an artistic giant, became a public treasure, a testament to Lenbach’s vision and legacy. It stands as a unique blend of architectural styles, a repository of art and history, and a vibrant part of Munich’s cultural landscape.
