Perched in Münster-Hiltrup stands a treasure trove of African artistry. The Kunsthalle Schnake presents Zimbabwean sculptures. It is more than just an art gallery. It is a vibrant testament to the enduring power of art.

Kunsthalle Schnake is closely linked to Eberhard Schnake. Since 2000, he has dedicated himself to Zimbabwean sculptors. Since 2003, he has showcased their work in his Kunsthalle Schnake. This became the permanent exhibition “Spirits in Stone”.

What makes Kunsthalle Schnake special? It’s the story of “speaking stones” from Africa. Eberhard Schnake, the gallery owner, travels to Zimbabwe. He selects the best pieces directly from local artists. Over 200 “speaking stones” are on display at the Kunsthalle Schnake. These include works by old masters like Fanizani Akuda. You can also find works by Edward Chiwawa, Kakoma Kweli, and Bernard Matemera. The gallery also represents many young talents. They continue the tradition of sculpture.

Schnake once presented a special exhibition. It featured the works of Nicholas Mukomberanwa. Mukomberanwa is considered one of Africa’s most important artists. He belonged to the first generation of sculptors in Zimbabwe. Schnake collected Mukomberanwa’s works for over 20 years. His collection is unique in Europe.

Schnake recalls his first encounter with African sculptures. He says he was electrified. The stones reminded him of works by Pablo Picasso. They also reminded him of Max Ernst and Henry Moore. The sculptures are now displayed in major museums worldwide.

The special exhibition showed Mukomberanwa’s sculptures. They spanned 50 years of his career. It offered a unique chance to discover his artistic vision. Mukomberanwa’s masterpieces were displayed at the Kunsthalle Schnake in Münster-Hiltrup.

Eberhard Schnake regularly visits Zimbabwe. He brings the finest works of new artists to Germany. He especially wants to show them in Hiltrup. Art lovers and collectors travel from all over Germany to attend his events.

Works by renowned artists have been shown in prestigious museums. These museums are the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Musée Rodin in Paris.

At the Kunsthalle Schnake, over 200 works are on permanent display. They are available for purchase under the title “Spirits in Stone”. Eberhard Schnake knows the sculptors personally. He understands their lives and artistic intentions. He often visits Tengenenge, a well-known artist village. This village is the origin of modern sculpture in Zimbabwe.

Kunsthalle Schnake is more than a gallery. It’s a meeting point for art. It is a place for cultural exchange. It is a place to appreciate the beauty and power of Zimbabwean sculpture. The “speaking stones” tell stories of Africa. They tell stories of creativity. They tell stories of human connection.

The Kunsthalle Schnake has been offering sculptures for 20 years. It has many long-term customers. These customers have developed a passion for the sculptures. The Kunsthalle Schnake is also a digital “world exhibition”. It aims to reach collectors and art enthusiasts. It wants to connect friends of Zimbabwean sculpture worldwide. The Kunsthalle Schnake welcomes every visitor.
