The Kunsthalle Mainz occupies a building designed by Eduard Kreyßig in 1887. It served as a boiler and engine house in the Mainz Zollhafen. In 2006 the building was renovated by the Mainz Stadtwerke. Since its opening on March 1 2008 it has become a leading venue for contemporary art.

The Berliner Architekturbüro of Günter Zamp Kelp masterminded the conversion. The architect’s vision included a complete renovation and repurposing. He also added a striking 21-meter-high tower. This tower slants at a dramatic seven-degree angle. The former engine house now houses a café a perfect spot to contemplate your artistic journey.

The Kunsthalle Mainz boasts 840 square meters of exhibition space. This is divided into three large interconnected rooms in the original building. Three more smaller cabinet-like spaces are located within the new tower. The space itself is an integral part of the experience.
