This is Kunst im Quadrat, a burst of artistic energy in the heart of Munich. Kunst im Quadrat isn’t a building or a single museum. It’s a free festival, a living canvas painted with performances, concerts, theater, discussions, and workshops. It’s a community celebration of art, a temporary haven of creative expression. Kunst im Quadrat blossoms for 16 days, usually between the end of July and mid-August, transforming the familiar Theresienwiese into a kaleidoscope of artistic endeavors. Imagine discovering over 40 different workshops, from VJ-ing and DJ-ing to photography, noise music, dance, capoeira, ceramics, and a spectrum of painting and printing techniques. Many are open workshops, welcoming spontaneous participation, while some require pre-registration. Don’t just picture it, see it: interactive art actions like “Poetry to go” and tape art weaving magic, enchanting even the queue at the entrance. Kunst im Quadrat is more than just a festival. It’s a vibrant ecosystem, fostered by organizations like Glockenbachwerkstatt, Luise, Kösk, and Färberei, and nurtured by the support of various city districts, cultural and social departments, and even national cultural initiatives. On Sundays, Kunst im Quadrat extends a special invitation. Join the Community Dance, lend your voice to the Community Orchestra, or engage in a Bürger*innenversammlung, where citizens, particularly children and youth, can dialogue directly with city politicians. Senior citizens can enjoy Sunday matinees and the legendary Musikbingo with “Oll inklusiv” from Hamburg. Kunst im Quadrat embraces inclusivity, ensuring accessibility for all. Even the seating is a work of art. 250 chairs, generously gifted by the Kongresshalle, are transformed into unique canvases by participating artists and workshop attendees.
