This path once led down to the Isar river. “Gacher” is Bavarian for steep. Over time, “gacher Steig” evolved into Gasteig.

Currently, the Kulturzentrum am Gasteig has two locations. The main location is Gasteig HP8. It is located at Hans-Preißinger-Straße 8 in Sendling. The other location is Gasteig Motorama. It is in the shopping center at Rosenheimer Straße 30 to 32. The original building at Rosenheimer Straße is being renovated. After it is complete, the Gasteig will move back.
Gasteig HP8 offers many facilities. Hall E is a listed building over 100 years old. It houses a café, bar, ticket office and a branch of the Munich Public Library. The Isarphilharmonie is the largest concert hall at Gasteig HP8. It can accommodate 1,900 people. The hall has excellent acoustics. It hosts various concerts. Hall X hosts dance performances, concerts, and theater. The Small Hall in Building K hosts smaller concerts.
The Gasteig Motorama houses a branch of the Munich Public Library. Here you can find books, games, and computers. The library hosts events.
Many organizations call the Gasteig HP8 home. These include the Munich Public Library and the MVHS adult education center. The Munich Philharmonic orchestra also resides here.
Getting to Gasteig HP8 is easy. You can take bus 54 or X30 to the Schäftlarnstraße/HP8 stop. You can take the underground to Brudermühlstraße station. You can also drive and park in the Parkhaus Blumen-Großmarkt car park. The Gasteig HP8 is open daily from 7 AM to 11 PM.
