Have you ever heard of a temple so revered, it doubled in size? Kuan Im Tng Temple, right here on Waterloo Street, is just that place. Built in 1884, this temple is one of Singapore’s oldest Buddhist temples. It’s dedicated to Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, but other deities reside here as well. You’ll find Ta Ma Tan Shith, a chief Buddhist patriarch, and Hua Tuo, the patron saint of Chinese medicine. The original temple structure was a traditional courtyard design, common in the late 19th century. Visitors would enter through a porch and anteroom into a covered courtyard. This courtyard led to the main prayer hall. Inside, Guan Yin, Ta Ma Tan Shith and Hua Tuo each had their own altars. Shakyamuni Buddha resided in a rear hall. The temple’s history is rich with stories, including serving as a refuge during the Japanese Occupation. By the late 1970s, the original structure was demolished. In 1982, it was rebuilt and expanded, doubling its size. The new temple kept some original elements, but it also incorporated modern design features. The deities are now all housed within a single altar, with Shakyamuni Buddha positioned behind Guan Yin. The new temple is a striking sight with its two roofs of differing heights and a large gateway flanked by two smaller gates. Incense is no longer burned inside the hall to prevent soot from staining the ceiling. You’ll find the incense urn outside now. Kuan Im Tng Temple is also known for its divination sticks, called qian. These wooden sticks with inscriptions are shaken in a can, and those that fall out foretell the future. In 1990, the temple became the first in Singapore to offer English translations of the divination slips. This made the practice accessible to a wider audience. The temple is a bustling hub of activity, especially on the 1st and 15th days of each lunar month. The busiest time is Chinese New Year’s Eve when thousands of devotees pack the street to offer incense to Guan Yin for a prosperous new year. Kuan Im Tng Temple isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vital part of Singapore’s cultural fabric, contributing generously to social, educational, and arts organizations. Its philanthropic efforts have earned it recognition, including the Patron of the Arts award in 2002. So, as you stand before Kuan Im Tng Temple, remember it is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to faith, tradition, and community.
