Once a pristine waterway a haven for recreation. Today the Krukut River whispers tales of Jakarta’s transformation. Standing before its waters you sense a history far deeper than the murky depths. The Krukut River is more than just a river. It’s a living artery that has pulsed through Jakarta’s heart for centuries. Its name itself is shrouded in mystery. Some say it stems from the Betawi word “krokot” meaning frugal. This referred to the Arab community who once thrived along its banks. Others believe it originates from the Dutch “kerkhof” meaning cemetery. Numerous Betawi cemeteries once dotted the landscape here.

The Krukut’s journey begins in Bogor Regency in West Java. Its waters meander for 31.39 kilometers before merging with the Banjir Kanal Barat near the Karet area. In the past its clean waters attracted visitors. During the Dutch East Indies period it was a popular destination. However urbanization changed all that. Denser housing and inadequate maintenance polluted the river. This resulted in regular flooding especially during the rainy season.

Imagine the Krukut River in the early 1970s. It was a wide 25-meter channel deeper than a person’s height. It served as an irrigation source for rice fields and fish farms. No buildings were permitted along its banks. It was strictly a designated water flow area. But this idyllic scene soon disappeared. Illegal construction proliferated. Household trash was routinely discarded into the river. Despite clean-up efforts in 2017 the river’s width narrowed significantly. In some sections it became as narrow as 1.5 meters.

The river’s plight highlights Jakarta’s struggle to manage its urban development. The normalization of the Krukut began under Governor Ali Sadikin from 1966 to 1977. This included straightening the river’s course. It also involved removing problematic bends and sediment islands. This project though necessary resulted in the displacement of approximately 8000 people. Their homes stood along the riverbanks.

Even today the Krukut faces ongoing challenges. Illegal structures continue to encroach upon its banks reducing its width. The government has pledged to evict luxury houses that illegally occupy the designated open green spaces. These houses exacerbate flooding problems as seen in the devastating Kemang floods of August 2016.

The Krukut River a symbol of both Jakarta’s rich history and its ongoing urban struggles. Its story serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between progress and preservation. It is a story etched into the very fabric of Jakarta a story that unfolds with each passing raindrop and each flowing current. Its future depends on balancing the needs of the city with the preservation of its natural heritage. The Krukut’s waters may be dark now but its history remains vibrant a story waiting to be discovered.
