Perhaps it’s the wind, or perhaps it’s the echoes of the past whispering around the Kriegerdenkmal Konz-Karthaus. This war memorial stands in the cemetery on Domänenstraße. It is a somber yet striking tribute to those lost in World War I.

The Kriegerdenkmal Konz-Karthaus was erected around 1925. The monument displays expressionistic features making it quite rare. The Kriegerdenkmal Konz-Karthaus is made of light sandstone. The front features a relief of St. George.

Look closely at the inscriptions. The pillar reads: 1914-1918. The pillar’s cap bears the inscription: “Den Helden Die Gemeinde Karthaus” meaning “To the heroes, the community of Karthaus.” The base proclaims “Niemand hat größere Liebe denn die, daß er sein Leben läßt für seine Freunde” meaning “No one has greater love than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

On the right side of the Kriegerdenkmal Konz-Karthaus, you will see names in bronze letters along with a Christuskopf in half-relief. On the left, a soldier’s head with a steel helmet appears in half-relief, accompanied by more names in bronze. The names of the fallen from World War I are etched here. Names like Willy Adler who died in 1918. Peter Annen who died in 1918. Johann Anton who died in 1914. Theodor Anton who also died in 1914.

The pillar is capped with a blunt sandstone tip. It is crowned by an iron cross made of copper. The Kriegerdenkmal Konz-Karthaus stands on a Schieferbruchstein base.

The Kriegerdenkmal Konz-Karthaus blends Christian and national symbols. A Christuskopf faces a Stahlhelmkopf. A sword opposes St. Michael slaying the dragon. Konz-Karthaus was once a vital railway hub. It connected Trier and Saarbrücken. Despite heavy anti-aircraft defenses, it suffered multiple French bombings. Karthaus housed a large residential area for railway personnel.

Take a moment to reflect on the cost of war. Remember those who sacrificed everything. The Kriegerdenkmal Konz-Karthaus serves as a reminder of the past. May it also inspire hope for a more peaceful future.
