Did you notice the stone block with a sphere resting atop it? That is the Kriegerdenkmal. It stands as a somber reminder of war’s cost. The Kriegerdenkmal is located in the Rheinauenpark.

This Kriegerdenkmal was established around 1920. Nobis and Lauder gifted it. The Reichsvereinigung ehemaliger Kriegsgefangener e.V. and Verband der Heimkehrer e.V. from Bonn helped fund it.

The Kriegerdenkmal’s rectangular block sits on a stepped base. It is made of shell limestone. An inscription declares “Unseren toten Kameraden zum Gedenken 1914 1918”. This translates to “In memory of our dead comrades 1914 1918”. The years 1939-1945 were added later to the Kriegerdenkmal. This acknowledged the Second World War.

Note the Iron Cross relief on the Kriegerdenkmal. The sphere above features a band with an inscription. It says “Die ganze Welt war Zeuge ihres Heldentums.” This means “The whole world witnessed their heroism.”

Turn around. Look at the back of the Kriegerdenkmal. An inscription shares a heartbreaking sentiment. “Sie k\u00e4mpften und stritten / Sie harrten und litten und starben in Schmerzen / mit dem Heimweh im Herzen F\u00fcr Deutschland!” This translates to “They fought and argued. They persevered and suffered and died in pain. With homesickness in their hearts For Germany”.

The Kriegerdenkmal is surrounded by decorative greenery and greywacke slabs. A simple dark wooden cross stands beside it. It is about 3 meters high.

Pause for a moment. Consider the weight of these words. Think about the soldiers. They fought. They suffered. Many never returned home. The Kriegerdenkmal stands in their memory. It serves as a place for reflection. People can pay their respects. They can remember the human cost of conflict here.

Now, let’s take a moment to reflect on the powerful message this monument conveys. May it serve as a reminder of the importance of peace and understanding in our world.
