Can you imagine a time before the Kreuzschanze was a peaceful park? The Kreuzschanze, as we see it today, is a tranquil green space. It’s hard to imagine it as a key part of Münster’s defenses. In the mid-17th century, this wasn’t a place for leisurely strolls. It was a bastion, a vital component in the city’s fortifications. Built between 1648 and 1660, along with similar structures at Hörstertor and Servatiitor, the Kreuzschanze is the only one remaining in its full size. Originally, a protective moat surrounded it. Remnants of this moat can still be seen in the two small ponds within the park. Close by stands the Buddenturm, a silent witness to the city’s past. This tower, initially built in 1150, has served various purposes over the years. It’s seen Münster transform from a fortified city to the vibrant hub it is today. The Kreuzschanze itself underwent a transformation in the late 19th century. The old city walls and fortifications had been dismantled around 1770. This paved the way for the Kreuzschanze’s rebirth as a green oasis. The visionaries behind this transformation were Adolf Kowallek, a garden director from Cologne, and Adolf Kleimann, a Münster city councillor. Today, the Kreuzschanze is more than just a park. It’s a living testament to Münster’s rich and layered history. As you wander along its paths, remember the echoes of the past. Think of the soldiers who once stood guard here and the moat that once protected the city. The Kreuzschanze is a place where history and nature intertwine. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of a modern city, the past is never truly gone. It whispers to us through the rustling leaves and the gentle breeze. The Kreuzschanze is a beautiful reminder of Münster’s resilience and ability to adapt.
