Is it a spaceship? Or a giant turtle shell? Many first-time visitors to Mainz ponder the curious shape of Kreuzkirche. The Kreuzkirche sits in Mainz-Zahlbach, a neighborhood once known as the “Schlesisches Viertel,” a haven for refugees after World War II. The striking circular structure, crowned by a large copper dome, is hard to miss. Kreuzkirche is far more than just a quirky building. It represents a pivotal moment in German church architecture. Dedicated on April 25, 1954, it was the first circular, centrally planned Catholic church built in 20th-century Germany. This groundbreaking design, by Richard Jörg and Bernhard Schmitz, boldly embraced the concept of a central church, placing the altar at the heart of the congregation. The design was a deliberate departure from the traditional layout and anticipated the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Light floods onto the altar, creating a powerful focal point. This “light direction” was a hallmark of Jörg’s work. Look closely at the three rings of glass bricks within the dome. See how they filter and diffuse the light, creating an ethereal glow. The church’s circular form extends beyond the main sanctuary. Even the trapezoidal forecourt was part of the overall design, creating an ellipse when combined with the church building. Fourteen concrete pillars support the outer ring of the structure, reminiscent of Gothic buttresses. Inside, fourteen slender, copper-clad doors can be opened to merge the altar area and forecourt into a complete circle, further emphasizing the sense of unity and community. The artistic details within Kreuzkirche are equally captivating. Twelve angels adorn the seven outer metal plates, symbolizing the New Jerusalem. Mosaics above the entrance doors, crafted by Peter Paul Etz, depict Old Testament motifs. The original color scheme of the ceiling rings, created by Paul Meyer-Speer, was refreshed in 2005 by Eberhard Münch. A Madonna figure by Hermann Volz graces one of the pillars. And a striking cross, crafted by Benedictine Sister Lioba Munz, hangs above the altar. Kreuzkirche stands as a testament to innovation and a powerful symbol of hope in post-war Germany. Its unique design and rich symbolism offer a truly unforgettable experience.
