Kreo, now an administrative district, was once part of the vibrant tapestry of Sunda Kelapa, a bustling port town at the river’s mouth. Kreo witnessed the convergence of traders from across Asia. They brought spices, silks, and stories from distant lands. These early interactions laid the foundation for the multicultural metropolis that Jakarta would become. The riverbanks, now within Kreo’s boundaries, once saw the arrival of the Portuguese in 1522. They sought pepper and nutmeg, signing a treaty with the Kingdom of Sunda for a fort in Sunda Kelapa. But victory belonged to Fatahillah, a military leader of the Demak Sultanate.
