Unearthed secrets whisper from the soil. Before you lies the Kreisgrabenanlage Dresden-Nickern a complex of at least four ancient circular ditches. This remarkable site dates back to the Linearbandkeramik culture a Neolithic civilisation flourishing between 5500 and 4500 BC.

These aren’t just ordinary ditches. They are part of a fascinating story. Imagine a landscape dotted with similar structures across Central Europe. Around 150 of these enigmatic sites were built between 4800 and 4600 BC. Structures of this scale were not seen again until the Bronze Age thousands of years later.

The Kreisgrabenanlage Dresden-Nickern was discovered largely by chance. Construction of a new access road to the A17 motorway led to excavations. These excavations uncovered several key parts of the complex. One site DD-02 boasts a 50-meter diameter. Another DD-98 measures a substantial 80 meters across. The largest NIE-09 even includes four concentric ditches ranging from 70 to 126 meters in diameter.

Within the inner circles of NIE-09 two palisade rings were found. They were slightly asymmetrical and enclosed an area of approximately 1140 square meters. Archaeologists believe the ditches were dug over several years from the inside out. The deepest ditch was the innermost. The others became shallower as they extended outwards.

Remarkably the total excavated volume remained roughly constant at 1000 cubic meters for each ditch circle. This consistency suggests a deliberate and carefully planned construction. Only about 15% of the complex has been excavated. Experts believe it might have included four earth bridges oriented to the cardinal directions.

Among the finds were ceramic figures. There were also postholes from typical Linearbandkeramik longhouses. Furthermore stone bone and wood tools were unearthed. The exact purpose of the Kreisgrabenanlage Dresden-Nickern remains a mystery. It may have been a defensive structure a marketplace a calendar or a religious temple.

What makes this site truly exceptional is the density of these structures. Four such large complexes within just one square kilometer are unique. Only a handful of other Kreisgrabenanlagen exceed its size. The site’s significance is further highlighted by its connection to the Prohlis finds. They represent a unique unbroken transition from the Linearbandkeramik to the Stichbandkeramik cultures. Today the Kreisgrabenanlage Dresden-Nickern stands as a testament to the ingenuity and complexity of Neolithic societies. A silent but powerful witness to a past that continues to unfold before us.
