Journey back to 1282. A figure named Heinricus de Kryschowe appears in the historical records. This marks the first documented mention of Kreischa. The very name Kreischa whispers tales of its past. It might originate from an old Slavic word. This word meant “crooked” or “lame,” painting a picture of the landscape or perhaps a local character. Kreischa today is a municipality nestled in the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district of Saxony, Germany. It shares a border with the vibrant city of Dresden and encompasses fourteen distinct districts. Kreischa is more than just its name. In 1849, it provided refuge to the renowned composer Robert Schumann and his family. They sought solace from the revolutionary unrest in Dresden. They found temporary peace in Kreischa. They likely stayed at the Sächsischer Hof Hotel, sadly destroyed by fire in 1860. Today, a bust of Schumann stands in the spa gardens of Kreischa. This was created by sculptor Heinz Kazzer in 1997. The bust stands as a tribute to the composer’s connection with the town. Kreischa also celebrates Schumann through the annual Schumanniade Kreischa. This music festival, initiated by the Arts and Culture Association “Robert Schumann” Kreischa, takes place at Reinhardtsgrimma Castle and the Church of Kreischa. This honors Schumann’s legacy in the peaceful setting where he once sought refuge. Kreischa also has a sister city connection with Loffenau in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. This partnership, forged in 1990, fosters cultural exchange and friendship between the two communities. From a name whispered in 1282 to a modern municipality, Kreischa has embraced its past. It also builds bridges to the future. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of Schumann’s music. Remember the tumultuous times that brought him to this peaceful haven. Kreischa is a testament to the power of history, culture, and community.
